Consistency; the Professional Horseman's Key to Success
Biography
Craig Cameron (General Training, Problem Solving) - grew up dreaming of
being a cowboy. Craig went to high school in Houston, TX, where he excelled
in football and track, but Craig was always most at home 100 miles West at
the 1,700 acre family cattle ranch. While still in high school, with no
formal training, Craig entered open rodeos in Texas where he competed in all
the rough stock events.
After high school Craig moved to a family ranch where he learned the
ranching business from the famous Texas Ranger family, the Hamers. Craig
loved traditional ranching methods always using horses in the operation to
work, move, and handle the cattle.
While living on the ranch, Craig pursued his rodeo career, earned his PRCA
card, and lived the rodeo life for almost two decades. During this period
Craig specialized in the bull riding and traveled all over the United
States, Canada, and Mexico, competing in the biggest rodeos in the world
including Houston, Fort Worth, Cheyenne, Calgary, and many more.
Craig grew up watching the rough and tumble methods of horse breaking and
training in the 1950's and 60's and Craig never did believe or cotton to the
unnecessary rough treatment these horses received. At the ranch Craig took
on problem horses from local ranchers and used a slower more natural
approach that seemed to work. Clients would get their horses back and be
puzzled by the incredible transition that had taken place in such a short
time. People wanted to come watch the magic at work. Craig said, "When I
started making them pay, they really started listening."
Craig then heard about a man named Ray Hunt who advocated working with the
horse and not against him. Craig followed in Ray Hunt's trail and became one
of the "original clinicians," filming his first video in 1985. Now Craig
performs his magic to horse enthusiasts all over the world where he travels
almost 90,000 miles and 44 weeks a year. Craig, called the Public Defender
of the horse, also hosts two silver "Telly" TV shows, "Ride Smart" and "The
Extreme Cowboy Race" on RFDTV, which have brought him even more notoriety.
Craig Cameron keeps the
cowboy way alive and well each day. Although he is most noted for his
innovative horsemanship skills and exciting teaching techniques, he is also
an incredible woodsman and hunter. Craig has received many awards, American
Cowboy Culture Award for the Working Cowboy, Western Equestrian Award, and
was recently honored by being adopted by the Crow Indian Nation and given
the name "Captures Many Horses" for his work with the Crow Indians in
Montana. If you know Craig Cameron, you know his sense of humor and his
trademark laugh that he is well known for at all his clinics, at the ranch
and on the road. But the road in many ways seems to still be home to Craig
Cameron. After years of rodeo and decades of horsemanship clinics on the
road, Craig is still going strong at an age where most men are riding the
rocking chair. Craig still starts hundreds of colts and teaches hundreds of
classes each year coast to coast and nation to nation. Craig Cameron may
have grown up dreaming of being a cowboy but with his induction into the
Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2007, people will now always say, "He did not
just dream it, he lived it. |

Concerns for the Older Rider
Biography
Montie Eagle (Horse Selection, Senior Riding) -
has been a student of classical dressage since the early 1980's. When
she met Jack Brainard in 2006 things took a decidedly western turn. Brainard,
a producer of ten world champions, is famous in the reining horse world and
travels the country yearly to teach western dressage. When Montie
started in dressage, she was fortunate to work with Pat Smeltzer and her
mentor Karl Mikolka. Karl is a former head rider from the Spanish Riding
School in Vienna. What Karl taught her was to ride and cue the horse
depending on where the horse's feet were. When she first spoke with Jack,
she realized that he taught on the same principles and felt right at home.
Today, after numerous clinics with Jack, Montie considers him her mentor.
Montie teaches students from all disciplines at her Carlisle PA facility,
where each student works on his or her specific goals. Her specialty
is teaching the adult rider, and finds her niche market is the returning
rider and the adult just starting to ride. These are the students who
eagerly rejoin the riding community or discover a love for horses in their
adult years. “Quite often my students have an established career and have
raised a family. They have waited to ride and they now realize this is their
time to pursue getting to know about horses and riding. I like to teach
everyone how horses think and react through ground work and how this
translates to success in the saddle when they ride.”
"I have been blessed with great teachers," says Montie. On the classical
dressage side these include clinics with Erik Herbermann, Lendon Gray, and
Karen Ramsing. Western teachers include John Lyons, Richard Shrake, Lori
Beth Morris and Eitan Beth-Halachmy, the founder of cowboy dressage.
Montie's core belief is that dressage is for everyone and that each horse
and rider, regardless of chosen discipline, can gain from work in dressage.
"You want your horse to be a joyous ride and a sound, athletic lifelong
companion." |

Getting Started With Garrocha
Biography
Patrick King (Western
Dressage) - was very fortunate to grow up riding and competing with many
breeds of horses in various disciplines. He’s just as comfortable flying
over a jump, driving a team of drafts, or roping and sorting cattle as he is
starting colts and riding canter pirouettes in the dressage arena. Early on,
though, a horse came into his life that wouldn’t put up with inadequacy on
the part of the human. A challenge from this horse threatened Patrick’s life
and sparked a new journey that didn’t involve ribbons.
His was set on a quest to find true horsemanship… Since then, Patrick has
been fortunate enough to make friends and spend time with some of the
industry’s top horsemen, and has also spent countless hours studying the
work of the old masters. Being offered the rare opportunity to spend
extended time living and learning with master horseman Ray Hunt and his wife
Carolyn catapulted Patrick’s horsemanship. It became a simple way of life to
have a ‘real job’ for each horse, even from the first ride. Horsemanship
turned from a ‘practiced science’ into a ‘living art’ under Ray’s watchful
eyes and priceless guidance.
Like you, Patrick seeks to be an eternal student of the horse and the
horsemen that have come before him – and he feels it is his duty to share
the knowledge that he has gained along his journey. Throughout the year he
travels around helping people and their horses through his clinics, camps,
workshops, and expo demonstrations. His students are of all levels and
disciplines, from Grand Prix Dressage riders to more casual riders that
aren’t interested in competing but are still very serious about their
horsemanship. What Patrick teaches is not so much an exercise or drill, as
so many other clinicians and trainers teach, but a feel. It’s a feel that
becomes a connection and a synchronicity of two minds and two bodies, the
horse and the human.
From classical dressage masters to old time vaqueros, Patrick’s teachers and
mentors have afforded him with layers of insight and experience that allows
him to bridge the gap between foundation training and advanced horsemanship.
And his primary aim is to share this with you. |

Horse Be Free; a Bonding of Horse & Rider
Biography
Dianne Olds Rossi
(Dressage, Freestyle) - America’s romance with the horse invokes both
its European classical foundations and a western mythology unique to this
country. As heiress to both its ancient roots and that American mythology,
Dianne Olds Rossi rides and performs in a spotlight reserved for few horsemen or
horsewomen in today’s world. Her passion for this training and performance she
calls The Magical World of Dancing Horses.
From her introduction to horses as a child, through her formative years,
Dianne’s development as an equestrienne came honestly with hard work and
instruction from some of the best master teachers in the country. “I
learned from all of them, even though they were all quite different in their
training methods. It became a progression from Albert Ostermaier to Arthur
Konyot and then to his daughter, Dorita Konyot.”
Albert Ostermaier, a German rider, was schooled in the classic style of the
European military. From Ostermaier, Dianne learned precision and discipline, the
strengths of the classic German approach. He was a difficult task master, but he
saw in Dianne the potential and the determination to improve in her skills.
Next was Arthur Konyot, a legend in his time. The Konyot family was originally
from Hungary and for many generations they had performed with horses for the
European circus. They left the circus to offer training expertise to the US. Dorita Konyot taught Dianne not to "pull on zee horse" and gave her the
knowledge of gentle riding.
But even before those classical foundations, Dianne was an American girl growing
up on the visions of television escapades of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. It
all came to life and became quite personal when she met Rex Rossi in 1980. Rossi
was a World Champion trick rider and trick roper as well as a stunt man in
Hollywood westerns. He doubled for Roy Rogers, Gene Kelly, Tyrone Power and many
other Hollywood legends when on a horse. He was a personal friend of Gene Autry
(Rex’s white trick riding saddle is still on display in the Gene Autry Museum).
An incredible horseman, he introduced Dianne to the beauty of the liberty horse.
They married and lived their dream, travelling the country with Dianne
exhibiting Andalusians in Madison Square Garden and Rex doing his rope tricks.
For Dianne, one thing never changed. It was always about the horse and not
about Dianne. More than a case of celebrity for the rider, it was and is a case
of partnership between horse and rider. That still holds true today for this
woman who is truly unique in her approach to training and horsemanship. Dianne
Olds Rossi personifies the American Horsewoman. Her compassion knows no bounds
and her horsemanship is grounded in the classical methods that have stood the
test of time.
There is much for us to learn from those horsewomen and horsemen who carry the
knowledge and wisdom of the American past through experiences rarely offered in
today’s world of horses. This combination of classical training, show
competition, performance exhibition, and the immersion in the mythology of the
American West gives to Dianne Olds Rossi, a revered place in American equestrian
history. She has done it all, and even after having done it all, her focus is
always on the horse. For Dianne, the spotlight remains on the horse and the
rider as a true partner. It is her wish that the performance be viewed as a
partnership between equine and human.

Eight Principles of Good Horsemanship
Biography
Pat Parelli (General
Training) - Born in the California’s
Bay Area, Pat Parelli was obsessed with horses at an early age. Pat’s horse
career began with working in stables at age 9. If there were horses, Pat
would be there, enthusiastically helping with whatever he could, ears open
for every drop of information. He even started to develop his own ideas
about raising foals and training horses, an unusual thing for a young boy.
When Pat was just 13, a horseman and trapper named Freddie Ferrera of
Livermore, California recognized Pat’s talents with horses and took him
under his wing. During the summers he would teach him invaluable lessons
about how to be more natural with horses, dogs, cattle, and nature itself.
At the age of 17, Pat Parelli launched himself into rodeos, his favorite
event being the bareback riding. A natural, with a good coach in John
Hawkins, Pat won the Bareback Rookie of the Year title in 1972, his buck-off
average just 4%. Watching many rodeo athletes trying to move on, Pat was
determined to find life after rodeo. A career in training horses seemed
logical and he started a business that concentrated on starting colts.
However, like many trainers before him, it wasn’t long before the pattern of
equine and financial frustration set in and Pat found himself on the verge
of getting out of horses altogether. He also resisted the idea that horse
training should treat horses like inanimate objects.
Then three significant events changed his life. He met Troy Ernst from
Australia, who was a student of the horse, a disciple of Kung Fu martial
arts and a master musician. He began to work under the tutelage of Troy
Henry, a master horseman from Clovis, California, who specialized in
training and developing both horse and rider for competition using
psychology and communication. He took an interest in developing mules to be
able to perform like horses.
Through Tony Ernst, Pat learned about inner power and the Kung Fu principles
of discipline, body control, and mind-body mastery. Troy Henry opened up a
whole new world to Pat by helping him understand horses’ mental and
emotional processes as prey animals as well as the true dynamics of
horsemanship and how they applied to performance horses. The mules taught
Pat the importance of reverse psychology, the principles of safety and
comfort as the only real incentives, and developed in him more savvy on how
to get a prey animal to “want” to perform. They also taught him about
patience! In 1980, Pat founded the American Mule Association.
Being an intense student of horses and horsemanship, Pat had begun to
develop his own style of teaching and expanding these principles. He also
became interested in showing reined cow horses and was successful in reining
and cutting events with both horses and mules. One of the greatest
frustrations Pat experienced was handing them back to their owners who often
had a noticeable lack of skill and understanding. He found that if the rider
didn’t have enough savvy, the horses would regress. After much soul
searching he finally decided that he couldn’t go on just training horses, he
had to find a way to help people become more savvy with horses.
Pat discovered he had a natural talent in finding the right words to explain
what he understood about horses. So he turned his attention to helping
people instead of horse training. He began to give “lessons” but had no idea
that one day he would be able to help people on a much larger scale. In
1983, while performing bridleless at the California Livestock Symposium, Pat
met three men who significantly contributed to his horsemanship knowledge:
Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt and Ronnie Willis – all masters who became Pat’s
mentors. A few years later the world’s leading equine behaviorist, Dr. R. M.
Miller, observed one of Pat’s bridleless demonstrations and recognized that
Pa1t’s concepts aligned strongly with his own philosophies on influencing the
horses’ mind and on foal imprinting. He predicted that by the time Pat
Parelli reached age 40, he would have become one of the best horsemen and
teachers the world had known.
Pat Parelli is the creator of the term Natural Horsemanship. Since his first
seminar on March 1st, 1982 Pat has presented his philosophy of love,
language and leadership to over 1 million people, including the Queen of
England, Anthony Robbins, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Tom Selleck. He has had
over 200,000 students in 57 countries enrolled in his long-distance study
program. More than 1000 episodes of his education and inspirational program
have been broadcasted on several different TV stations in three continents.
Magazine articles have been published in over a dozen different languages.
Pat Parelli was not only the founding President of the American Mule
Association in 1976, he also founded the Parelli Foundation which supports
Parelli students on their journey if becoming Parelli Professional, Youth
Horsemanship, Therapeutic Horsemanship, and Horse Welfare. |

Saddle Fit Consultation
Biography
Terry Peiper (Saddle
Ergonomics) - Terry Peiper has been "Helping Horses With Their People" in
south central PA for over 30 years as an accredited Richard Shrake
Resistance Free ® Trainer/Instructor and certified American Riding
Instructors Association (ARIA) Instructor. She has more than 45 years horse
showing experience in several disciplines ranging from 4-H, Hunters,
Appaloosa breed shows, barrel racing, dressage and side-saddle, as well as
several years of fox hunting, hunter paces and open show judging. You could
say she has been there and done that.
Studying saddle ergonomics started out as just another way for Terry to help
her students. However, it quickly took over her life when she discovered
that her own horse, Easy, had a condition called kissing spine which was
likely caused by many years of riding in poor fitting saddles. "I can't go
back and undo what I have done, but I can spread the word about proper
saddle fit to prevent other horses from needless suffering" says Terry.
Recognizing the huge need for proper saddle fit, Terry joined the Saddlefit
4 Life professionals and started the FIT RIGHT SADDLE SOLUTIONS. She
passionately pursues her mission to educate as many riders as possible in
the south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland area the importance of
proper saddle fit, how it affects the horse's performance, behavior and
ultimately horse and rider health through lectures and saddle fit
evaluation/consultations. |

Draft Horse Hitches
Biography
Dave
Rohrbach (Driving & Harness) - is the owner of Bee Tree Trail Carriage &
Wagon Tours along side his wife Susie. Dave has worked with horses for over
30 yrs from showing saddle horses such as cutting, team penning, racing
Thoroughbreds, and starting young horses. In 1999 he went for a carriage
ride in Allentown PA and fell in love with these large horses. The sound of
the shoes going down the road is so relaxing it will put you to sleep. Talk
about slowing things down and seeing what you have been missing. So he
bought a team of draft horses to have a little fun, well one thing led to
another. Seeing how much fun it was to have other people enjoy these
beautiful, relaxing rides he decided to start his own business.
Decades of involvement with horses from many disciplines including pleasure,
speed events, cattle work, team penning and cutting, training race horses
and starting young horses of all breeds, prepared Dave for his ongoing
adventure in understanding the mind and body of draft horses. His vast
knowledge of horses, hitching techniques, understanding of harness and the
mechanical dynamics of carriages and various driving vehicles makes Dave the
"go to " person for questions from horse people far and wide.
Since beginning his draft horse carriage business over 15 years ago and
mastering the art of driving multiple hitche teams including unicorn, 4's,
6's, 8's and 10's, 3,4 & 5 abreast, 10 & 15 horse pyramids, tandem, random,
quondam and "suicide" (5 horses in line) the rest is history. Dave and
Susie, his wife, Bee Tree Trail and The Boys (a herd if gray, almost white,
17.2 hand Percheron geldings) are known worldwide. Bee Tree Trail carriages
and exhibition hitches are featured at Expo's and fairs, throughout the
country, on television (Extreme Home Makeover, Say Yes to The Dress, My Fat
American Gypsy Wedding, TLC, MTV, RFD) in movies, special events, specialty
weddings, and parades. Dave's hands on teaching style, information packed
clinics and workshops always leave participants eager to learn more.
Bee Tree Trail Carriage & Wagon Tours is located in the base of the Blue
Mountains just north of Shartlesville Pa. Dave does most of his business on
the road traveling from state to state such as New York, New Jersey,
Maryland, Delaware and Ohio competing with his teams and conducting tours. |

Ulcers, Colic & Laminitis... Oh My!
Biography
Burt Staniar, PhD (Penn
State Equine Sciences) -
is a faculty member in the Department of Animal Science at Penn State. Dr. Staniar's research at Penn State focuses on how nutrition influences healthy
growth and metabolism of the horse. Dr. Staniar's research has focused on the
metabolic implications of feeding horses diets with different dietary energy
sources. He is particularly interested in the chemical communication that occurs
between different tissues and cells that allow them to respond appropriately or
inappropriately to the nutritional environment. In this context, he studies the
somatotropic and gonadotropic axes, he investigates the patterns of glucose,
insulin, non-esterified fatty acids, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor
I, and a host of other factors. Ultimately, Dr. Staniar hopes that his research
helps to improve the health and performance of horses.
He and graduate students in his lab are now working to understand how different
feeding management strategies impact metabolic health, skeletal development and
growth, and gastrointestinal integrity. The objective of this work is to
identify nutritional strategies that can be used to reduce the risk of health
problems that are a serious concern to the equine industry including gastric
ulcers, laminitis, and colic. In addition, Dr. Staniar teaches and advises
undergraduate students at Penn State's University Park campus. He particularly
enjoys his work with the Penn State Equine Research Team, a group of
approximately 50 undergraduate students that participate in many of his research
trials. |

Sylvia Zerbini
Grande Liberté Farm booth 320
Theatre Equus Performer |
Biography
Sylvia Zerbnin (Theatre Equus
Performer) - is living
every little girl’s dream. The woman in the spotlight surrounded by a
spellbinding herd of horses at liberty. Sylvia transforms liberty work into the
ultimate equestrian performing art. “I’ve been with horses my entire life. It’s
in my blood,” says Sylvia, a ninth generation performer who’s captivated
audiences throughout Europe, North America, and South America, since her debut
on stage at the age of five.
Most recently the star of the acclaimed equestrian spectacle Cavalia
(2008-2011), Sylvia’s gift for orchestrating nine Arabians at once in her
mesmerizing Grande Liberte performance, has earned accolades from widespread
media ranging from the Los Angeles Times to CNN to Arabian Horse World. “I am
blessed with a gift for reading horses. It’s about the bond,” explains Sylvia,
who grew up around her family’s horses. Studying their behavior at rest and play
became her equine classroom, inspiring Sylvia to adopt liberty as a chosen way
of communicating with horses.
“I listen to what they tell me,” remarks Sylvia who uses only body positions and
a handful of verbal cues to communicate with 8-10 horses on stage, one third of
which are stallions. Born in Sarasota, Florida, Sylvia grew up with her parents
on tour. Her father was a wild animal trainer. Like her mother, a famous trapeze
artist, Sylvia took to the air as a girl, but horses were her true passion. At
an age when most teens get a driver’s license, Sylvia was professionally
training and performing with liberty horses. “Being a trapeze artist helped me.
Horses are agile. They’re like dancers,” notes Sylvia. Another parallel is the
absolute focus required to work with numerous horses at liberty. “Timing is
everything,” she notes. Sylvia calls the horses themselves her greatest mentors.
She coined the phrase Grande Liberté (French for grand liberty) specifically for
liberty exhibitions involving more than six horses, her specialty.
Honored with numerous awards including the prestigious Cup of Monaco, presented
to her by Monaco’s Prince Rainier, Sylvia has performed for nearly 10 million
people in her career, to date. She appeared at landmarks such as Madison Square
Gardens in New York, Playa De Americas in Mexico City, Molsen Center in
Montreal, and Los Angeles’ Staples Center, before touring with Cavalia.
Now launching a dream, that has been a lifetime in the making, Sylvia is
developing seminars and clinics, which have never before been offered to the
public, to share her knowledge of liberty training. “My dream is to help educate
the equine world,” adds Sylvia, who has a farm in Ocala, Florida, where her
headquarters is based. Seminars and clinics will be available throughout the
country, as well as in Ocala. Look for Sylvia and her Arabian horses also to
continue their signature Grande Liberté exhibitions at select equestrian events
in the months ahead. |
